Mash Tun Journal is a paean to craft beer. It follows the pleasures and aesthetics of craft beer and how it intersects with food, culture, and society.

Mash Tun Journal was founded in 2012 as a project by the Chicago based non profit, Public Media Institute, publishers of Lumpen Magazine and Proximity Magazine and the tavern, Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar. The Mash Tun Journal is one of many projects that the non profit explores within and beyond the intersections of art and hospitality industries.

It debuted as a perfect bound journal sold on newsstands and bookstores and evolved into a free circulation newsprint publication distributed at better bars and brewery taprooms around the country.

The publication led to the creation of beer and food festivals and it inspired the publishers to embark on opening a brewery called Marz Community Brewing Co.

The brewery currently supports the ongoing publishing of the journal as well as many other projects organized by Public Media Institute, including Lumpen Radio, the Co-Prosperity Sphere, and the Buddy retail shop located in the Chicago Cultural Center.
